spiritually fat/fed?

Posted in Walking with God by theracie on November 11, 2009

I’ve been sharing with my caregroup at great length about the following analogy.

We are in a church where we are fortunate to receive numerous teachings and sermons. The Word of God can be yummy – We chew upon what is taught and we even share food reviews with one another… All of these are satisfying and they nourish our soul.

The danger comes when we only consume. Many of the good things we learn remain just as they are – good things.

Imagine someone sitting in his living room stuffing himself all day. Like someone who eats and eats nonstop, our constant consumption of the Word without any action can lead to spiritual obesity. Honestly, the sight of that person sitting in an armchair and gorging on designer bread (You know, “Give us today our daily bread?” HAHA.) isn’t attractive at all. It screams: Lump of Lard Becoming One With Living Room Furniture. I wonder what would others think, really.

“Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” (1 Cor 8:1) All the knowledge we’re getting is adding to the cream in the cream puff! Okay, I know, that previous sentence was completely irrelevant.

We must exercise. If you want your spiritual body to be a lean, mean fighting machine, it’s time to get out of that armchair and allow ourselves to get involved in some body building.

Remember what I mentioned earlier – Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up? We know that LOVE is a verb. An action word.

This basically means that if we’re keen on keeping fit, we need to act upon what the Word of God has given us. We need to live out what we have received. We must exercise our faith.

Let’s be spiritually fed, not spiritually fat.

Good analogy, very succinct and apt. Our society certainly needs more practising Christians than bible scholars. =)
